After 16 years of marriage, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, 41, knows a thing or two about successful marriages. So, when she celebrated her 16th wedding anniversary with husband Freddie Prinze Jr., 42, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, Sarah Michelle hilariously took to Instagram to share what every married couple needs after spending years together.

“Anniversary #Latergram Someone told me — Marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning all you need is two hearts and a diamond. But years later, you wish you had a club and a spade. #HappyAnniversary @RealFreddiePrinze,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself and Freddie.

The Hollywood actors previously met while filming the 1997 movie I Know What You Did Last Summer and later tied the knot in 2002. They have two kids together, daughter Charlotte, 8, and son Rocky, 6, and when People previously asked Sarah Michelle how she makes her marriage work, she simply said that she always puts her family first.

“Take the 10 minutes — put the phone down. Have a cup of coffee together. Walk the dog at the end of the night. Read a story with your kids,” she said. “Make the most of the time that you have. We are all pulled in so many directions, so make sure that, whichever one you are focusing on, you’re present.”

When Freddie and Sarah Michelle first started dating, he knew that he wanted to continue seeing the actress after he realized that they shared many common interests — including their mutual love of food! During a previous Facebook Live interview, the actor recalled an amazing time when he dined out with Sarah Michelle.

“Sarah Michelle came to dinner with me, and we sat down and she ate everything, including a crab that they let walk across the counter, then kill while it was alive in some oil and said, ‘It’s popcorn, try,'” he remembered. “And she ate it without even blinking, and I was like, ‘Yo, my girl is legit.'” Happy Anniversary, Freddie and Sarah Michelle!
