The weatherman has left the building! GMA’s resident weather forecaster Sam Champion celebrated his last day with the program Dec. 4 by looking back over his 25 years with ABC.
Most of the morning show was dedicated to reliving some of Champion’s best moments, both funny and serious, and was filled with hearty farewells from colleagues Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Lara Spencer, and Josh Elliott. The gang even presented the veteran broadcaster with a giant weather-themed cake!
Champion is leaving GMA for the Weather Channel where he will serve as the face of the network and as managing editor.
"You are a Renaissance man," said fellow anchor Roberts. "You encompass all that is good and right in this world and you show it each and every day when you show up here."
News anchor Josh Elliott got emotional as he expressed his sentiments. “I just want to say thank you because it's been a gift each and every day to work with you, Sam."
Champion also appeared emotional when addressing his coworkers. "I've had the extreme joy that I don't think very many people will ever know of working with your friends and your family," he said. "This will always be my home."
Ginger Zee, who currently serves as GMA’s weekend weather anchor, will fill Champion’s forecaster post going forward. “These boots are the biggest boots in the world," Zee said of Champion. "I will never be able to...fill them."
