Though Salma Hayek is a successful actress, director and producer, her most important role in life is mom to her daughter, Valentina.
But, in a new interview with People, the 48-year-old star admitted she wasn't always certain she'd get the chance to become a parent.
"I had my child so late in life," said Salma of giving birth shortly before turning 41. "I thought I wasn't going to be able to and it was such an important thing to me."

The Grown Ups actress and her husband, François-Henri Pinault, 53, welcomed Valentina, 8, in 2007. The couple — who became engaged in March 2007 — married in February 2009 in Paris.

Following the birth of her daughter, Salma confessed she took a hiatus from acting to ensure her focus "went completely on her." Her husband later convinced her to return to work to be a positive role model for Valentina, she said.
"It's important that your kids understand that they are the most important thing but it's not all about them. You set an example that you are also your own person and you have to continue to grow in the field that you are working," Salma added.
