Did Dan Die in the ‘Roseanne’ Series Finale? Plus, Get the Latest Details on the Show’s Reboot!

Calling all Roseanne fans!

Earlier this year, ABC announced an eight-episode Roseanne reboot is coming to TV in 2018 — and the new show will include crazy plot changes that differ from the story told in the 1997 series finale.

When the blue-collar sitcom came to an end after nine seasons in May 1997, protagonist Roseanne Conner (played by Roseanne Barr) confessed her beloved husband, Dan Conner (John Goodman), tragically died of a heart attack at the end of Season 8.

Additionally, it was revealed that the entire series was actually a story written by Roseanne about her life and major elements of the plot — including the Conners winning $108 million in the Illinois lottery — were actually fiction.

"My writing’s really what got me through the last year after Dan died. I mean at first I felt so betrayed as if he had left me for another woman. When you’re a blue-collar woman and your husband dies it takes away your whole sense of security," Roseanne explained in the program's finale.

"So I began writing about having all the money in the world and I imagined myself going to spas and swanky New York parties just like the people on TV, where nobody has any real problems and everything’s solved within 30 minutes," she continued.

According the Deadline, the upcoming reboot will include original characters Roseanne, Dan, Darlene Conner (Sara Gilbert), D.J. Conner (Michael Fishman), Becky Conner (Lecy Goranson), and Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf).

Sarah Chalke — who played Becky in Seasons 6-9 — will also return but in a different role, the details of which are being kept under wraps at this time. The biggest remake shocker is that Roseanne's husband Dan is still alive. Yes, seriously! In a 2009 blog post, actress Roseanne revealed Dan faked his own death.

In early July, TV Line additionally reported Darlene's husband, David Healy (played by Johnny Galecki), will appear on the revival show. In the finale, Darlene and David's entire relationship was basically erased and viewers learned the Conner's youngest daughter was actually with Mark Healy (previously portrayed by the late Glenn Quinn).

Though very few details of Darlene and David's storyline in the new show have been revealed, we do know the couple are parents-of-two. So cute!
