Last month, Rita — who married Tom in 1988 — revealed she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma. The star explained she had two surgical breast biopsies before her cancer diagnosis was confirmed by her doctor.

“Let’s face it — it’s an amputation,” she said of the mastectomy. Rita went on to explain she is now in the interim step between a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery where a tissue expander is inserted into her chest to gradually make room for new breasts.

As she continues to recover, the mom-of-two said she has been humbled by the outpouring of support from her family, friends and fans. “To be exposed to this amount of goodness — I’m just incredibly grateful,” she told the New York Times.
