So sad. When Princess Diana became a royal, she was privately battling an eating disorder. However, it was just revealed that Prince Charles’ cheating shenanigans during their marriage really had an impact on his wife’s appearance.

“You could see her fading physically,” Diana’s close friend Dr. James Colthurst said ahead of the documentary Diana: In Her Own Words, according to the Sunday Express newspaper. “It was clear to all those who knew her that the bulimia was a reaction to the circumstances she found herself in.”

During Diana and Charles’ 15-year marriage — they wed in 1981 and separated in 1992 — Charles had a love affair with his now-wife, Camilla Parker Bowles. As their union began to deteriorate, Diana’s disorder came to the surface and at that time, she bravely began talking about her struggle with the disease.

“I have it, on very good authority, that the quest for perfection our society demands can leave the individual gasping for breath at every turn. This pressure inevitably extends into the way we look,” Diana once said during a candid speech on the topic. “Eating disorders, whether it be anorexia or bulimia, show how an individual can turn the nourishment of the body into a painful attack on themselves. And they have, at their core, a far deeper problem than mere vanity.”

Princess Diana’s ballet teacher, Anne Allan, also opened up about how Diana felt about Charles being disloyal to her. “She loved Charles, yes, but Charles loved another woman,” Allan said. “It’s very hard for anyone when you love someone and you realize that perhaps they don’t love you. I think it made her very sad, devastated.”

And Diana, being the brave woman she was, even confronted Camilla about her wrongdoing. “I know that she did ask Camilla to leave her husband alone. I thought that was quite brave of her actually because I know how much that must have taken for her to do that and what do you do about it, what can you do about it?” Allan added. “All you can do is try to make the marriage work and hope in time that things change but that’s not really what happened.” Diana and Charles finalized their divorce in 1996, two years before Diana’s fatal death in a car crash.
