In 1992, Princess Diana famously posed for photographs while sitting in on a white bench in front of the Taj Mahal — and today, the snapshot remains one of the most iconic images captured of the late royal.
But, the stunning photo sadly paints a very different picture of the People's Princess, as it was taken just months before Diana, then age 30, and Prince Charles announced their separation after 15 years of marriage.

During their official visit to India in early 1992, Diana and Charles, now 67, kept busy with conflicting royal engagements, but were expected to appear at the Taj Mahal together. However, on Feb. 11, Diana traveled to the national monument alone while her husband was in meetings.
When asked by reporters what she thought of seeing the white marble mausoleum in person, Diana replied, "It was a fascinating experience — very healing." After being pressed to say more, she added, "Work it out for yourself," according to People.

Charles — who is now married to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall — and Diana announced their divorce in August 1996. The Princess of Wales sadly passed away in a car accident just one year later in August 1997.
