Oprah Winfrey Gets Candid About Her 42-Pound Weight Loss: “I’ve Had Some Struggles”

Oprah Winfrey is getting honest about her weight loss journey!

The media mogul joined her longtime pal Gayle King on CBS This Morning on Tuesday, Jan. 4 to promote her new healthy cookbook Food, Health, and Happiness. The 62-year-old opened up about her experience losing weight on Weight Watchers — a program that’s helped her shed 42.5 pounds in the past year.

“Everybody knows, people who particularly watched the show with me all those years have seen my struggles. I’ve had some struggles,” the talk show host said, referring to her weight fluctuating in the past.

She said her past weight problems were more than just yo-yo dieting. She has struggled with her relationship with food — and revealed she’s even had thyroid issues.

Her lowest point was when she once hurt her ankle in Maui. She said she used her injury as an excuse to not stay active because it was hard for her to keep up with her workout routine. After that incident, Weight Watchers called her and offered their services, and that’s when she made the life-changing decision to join the company not only as a client, but also as an investor.

Oprah revealed that she’s been on every diet — from the cabbage soup diet to the no carb diet — and Weight Watchers has finally helped her find balance in her life. Now, she regularly enjoys foods that normally wouldn’t be allowed on a strict diet like truffle fries, tacos, and her all-time favorite, bread.

In her cookbook — which was released earlier this week — Oprah revealed one of her most embarrassing moments in her long, weight loss journey. During a 1985 appearance on The Tonight Show, she was shamed for her weight by the late Joan Rivers in front of millions of viewers.
