It’s never too late to make amends. Oliver Hudson revealed during a new interview on Larry King Now that he still keeps in touch with his estranged father, Bill Hudson. “Well, we’re trying right now,” the 41-year-old revealed. “We’ve shot some texts back and forth.”

Their relationship took a turn for the worse in 2015 when Oliver posted a throwback photo of himself, Bill, and his sister, Kate Hudson, on Father’s Day with the caption, “Happy Abandonment Day… @katehudson.”

Happy abandonment day… @katehudson

“There was an incident that happened via my Instagram,” Oliver explained of the post. “I had posted something that was darkly comedic and it blew up into something, and actually it helped us with our relationship. So now we’re kind of keeping in touch.”

Bill was very angry at first, however. In fact, he made it seem like it was the last straw. “That was like a dagger to the heart. If what he wanted was me out of their lives, then he’s succeeded. I don’t want to see either of my eldest children ever again. It’s over,” he said at the time. “I say to them now, ‘I set you free. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.”

Noticing his dad’s anger, Oliver made it a point to mend the relationship. “He did an interview and talked s—,” the actor said of his dad. “He felt hurt by it. I called him and we got on the phone and talked. It was really productive. Then we saw each other, had breakfast and it was the first time I had seen him in 12 years and it was really amazing to see him. We talked it out and we had a really great three-hour conversation.”

It seems Kate is not as forgiving of her dad’s words as Oliver is. In a previous interview, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress revealed her messy relationship with Bill had a negative effect on her love life. “I think that’s like the age-old psychological core issue for any situation,” the 38-year-old confessed. “Anybody who has had an experience with a parent that is absent, it’s going to manifest.”

When it comes to who’s to blame for the estrangement between Bill and his kids, though, he insists it’s all because of his ex-wife, Goldie Hawn, especially when her longtime boyfriend, Kurt Russell came into the picture. “When we split up, she never had a bad word to say about me. But when Kurt came on the scene, the narrative changed and I became the big, bad wolf. I would say to her, ‘Goldie, why are you trashing me and saying I’m an absent father when it’s simply not the case?’ and she’d laugh and go, ‘Oh Bill, you know it makes for a better story.'” We’re not sure who’s telling the truth, but we’re glad Oliver was able to make up with his dad.
