In a new interview, Nia Vardalos — who co-wrote both the 2002 film and its highly-anticipated sequel — revealed the inspiration behind the franchise’s upcoming second movie, and even dished on why it took nearly 15 years to get one our favorite onscreen families back together again.

“I was in the quest to be a mom, and I had written that we were parents at the end of the first movie and yet it was so difficult for me to become a mom,” Nia (aka Toula Portokalos) confessed to E! News. “So I stepped away and tried to become a mom.”

“On my daughter [Ilaria‘s] first day of kindergarten I got the idea for the sequel and started writing,” the 53-year-old actress said of the flick, which hits theaters Friday, March 25. The new film follows Toula and her loud family as they plan her parents’ wedding and her struggle with her young daughter going off to college.
