Michelle Obama’s 2013 Inauguration Dress — How Does It Compare to Melania Trump’s 2017 Outfit?

It’s Inauguration Day!

This afternoon, Donald Trump was officially sworn into office as the 45th President of the United States. Though all eyes were on the next POTUS, the nation is also buzzing about Melania Trump‘s outfit during the 2017 ceremony.

And, many Americans wondered — how does Melania’s dress compare to the frock First Lady Michelle Obama wore back in 2013 at Barack Obama‘s second inauguration?

Several years ago, Michelle, 53, wowed in a structured, navy blue checked coat designed by Thom Browne worn with a chic, statement belt by J.Crew. She also donned a Thom Browne dress underneath her coat. The mom-of-two — she shares daughters Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15, with husband Barack — paired the look with thigh-high navy boots and a pair of raspberry leather gloves.

“[Thom Browne] is not a designer you wander into a mall and find,” fashion editor Robin Givhan said of the FLOTUS’ ensemble at the time. The 2014 inauguration was the second time Michelle wore the designer for a notable event. She also donned a gray Thom Browne dress at the third presidential debate in 2012.

A few days before the event, Michelle debuted a new, shorter haircut with blunt bangs. She again displayed her perfect fringe and sleek strands at the inauguration. “I love her bangs. She looks good. She always looks good,” President Obama said of his wife’s updated look in 2013.

On the morning of Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, Melania, 46, debuted her inauguration look — a pale blue Ralph Lauren dress and a matching, double-faceted coat with three-quarter-length sleeves. She accessorized the outfit with long gloves and a pair of light blue pumps.

Most surprisingly, Melania — who shares a 10-year-old son, Barron, with husband Donald — swept her stunning, long tresses into a pretty, messy updo for the event.

As photographs of Melania’s ensemble surfaced, many people noticed the future First Lady’s look was reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy‘s outfit at her husband John F. Kennedy‘s 1961 inauguration. Nearly 60 years ago, Jackie donned a blue coat with oversized buttons, a pillbox hat, gloves, and a perfectly coiffed ‘do. Such a classic look!
