In an interesting turn of events, Meryl Streep, while presenting an award to Emma Thompson for her role in the Disney flick “Saving Mr. Banks,” bashed the man behind the magic for his allegedly “anti-Semitic” and “racist” views.
Meryl was tasked with giving the award to Emma at the National Board of Review Awards Gala in recognition of her portrayal as Mary Poppins' author P.L. Travers.
"Disney, who brought joy, arguably, to billions of people, was perhaps, or had some racist proclivities," Meryl began.
"He formed and supported an anti-Semitic industry lobby. And he was certainly, on the evidence of his company's policies, a gender bigot."
The actress then proceeded to read a rejection letter that Disney sent to an aspiring female animator, which said, "Women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen."
The 17-time Oscar nominee also seemed to get a kick out of picturing Disney’s difficult dealings with the infamously stubborn author.
"When I saw [Saving Mr. Banks], I could just imagine Walt Disney's chagrin at having to cultivate P.L. Travers' favor for 20 years,” she said.
“It must have killed him to encounter, in a woman, an equally disdainful and superior creature, a person dismissive of his own, considerable gifts and prodigious output and imagination.”
Though her comments were unexpected, Meryl jokingly said that she felt Emma would appreciate her observations because she’s “a rabid, man-eating feminist.”
Emma didn’t seem at all bothered by Meryl’s attack on one of her film’s central characters, instead saying, “My god, I’m nauseous with gratitude,” when going up to accept her award.
And though she did not mention Disney in her speech, Emma did jokingly acknowledge her feminist leanings when she said, "I've taken my heels off as a feminist statement really, because why do we wear them?
“They're so painful. And pointless, really," she made sure to add.
