Meredith Portrayed Very Differently on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 14 Poster Than Past Seasons

Big changes may be coming to Grey’s Anatomy next season. On Tuesday, Aug. 29, ABC revealed the official Season 14 poster promoting the hit medical drama’s upcoming episodes — and fans were quick to notice that main character Meredith Grey is portrayed very differently on this sign than past seasons’ posters.

The Season 14 banner shows Meredith along with three of her fellow Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital co-workers, Dr. Alex Karev, Dr. Miranda Bailey, and Dr. Richard Webber. Interestingly, this is the first time in two years that Meredith — portrayed by Ellen Pompeo since Season 1 — has appeared with other surgeons on the promotional flyer. The posters advertising Seasons 12 and 13 both featured Meredith alone as the star of the show. Crazy, right?

So, why exactly is this new poster without a solo Mer so surprising? First, it’s frankly just cool that Grey’s is paying homage to the few other characters who have remained on the show since its 2005 premiere. Alex (played by Justin Chambers), Miranda (played by Chandra Wilson), and Richard (played by James Pickens, Jr.) have all been on the series since the very first episode unlike most of the other current cast members who joined Grey’s Anatomy in recent years.

A few other fans noticed the placement of Meredith, Alex, Miranda, and Richard may be symbolic, as it seems like the supporting character trio is literally on Mer’s mind. Could that be a huge hint at the Season 14 storyline? In a recent interview with TVLine, Giacomo Gianniotti — who portrays Dr. Andrew DeLuca — shed some light on the newest episodes. “It’s funnier, it’s sexier, it’s lighter. It’s been dreary for a long time [with so much] separation and loss, so we want to show the characters having some fun,” he said. One thing is for sure — we can’t wait for Grey’s Anatomy to return to ABC on Thursday, Sept. 28!
