Ever since Prince Harry confirmed his relationship with Meghan Markle last November, all eyes have been on the couple’s burgeoning relationship. However, it’s not just their reported upcoming engagement that we’ve kept a close watch on, but Meghan’s extremely covetable style. An expert in effortless dressing — whether she’s on the red carpet or an airport runway — the potential future royal always looks elegant and chic. With Meghan and Harry recently making their first public appearance late last month, we decided it was high time we dissected her enviable wardrobe. Check out Meghan’s style rules below!

When in doubt, wear a white shirt

When it comes to off-duty style, the Suits star seems to have a wardrobe stacked with white shirts. Whether it’s courtside at Wimbledon or out and about in NYC, Meghan has turned to this classic and versatile piece on a plethora of occasions.

Most notably, Meghan wore a white shirt for her trip to the Invictus Games with Harry during their first public appearance as a couple. Paired with ripped jeans by Mother Denim and tan Sarah Flint flats, at an original glance the shirt seems fairly ordinary. However, as observant Meghan fans have pointed out, there is much more to the actress choosing the Misha Nonoo shirt than we initially thought. First up, the designer is a close friend of the actress’ who apparently introduced her to Harry via her ex-husband, Alexander Gilkes, an Eton alumni and friend of the royals. Secondly, the shirt in question is dubbed “The Husband Shirt,” pointing to their reported upcoming engagement.

Embrace British brands

Since Meghan started dating Harry, her wardrobe has had somewhat of a British makeover. Back in February when she was visiting her royal boyfriend in London, she stopped by a flower stall in High Street Kensington wearing two quintessentially British brands, a Barbour jacket and Hunter rain boots. Similarly, Mulberry is Meghan’s first choice when it comes to handbags, and she is regularly snapped in her favorite West London-based Finlay & Co sunnies. Plus, following in the footsteps of the Middleton sisters, Meghan turned to London-based Erdem for her dress when attending the wedding of one of Harry’s close school friends in Jamaica back in March.

Keep a simple color palette

Much like her onscreen alter ego, Meghan tends to shun loud prints and stick to neutral colors and sleek silhouettes. She knows what she likes and sticks to it, especially when it comes to evening wear when she is often spotted sporting dark maroon, classic red or understated black. “I like monochromatic and tonal dressing and I don’t generally wear prints, and neither does [my Suits character] Rachel now. Rachel wears a lot of separates — she’s really the only character on the show who you’ll see mix and match wardrobe basics like a normal person would,” Meghan once told Glamour.
