Meghan Markle and I Are Both in the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority — So, That Makes Me Royalty, Right?

Northwestern University, Samantha Faragalli

For the past year or so I've been writing about Meghan Markle in every way, shape, and form. Well, at least I thought so. The brunette beauty essentially broke the internet after she announced her engagement to Prince Harry in late November, and just when I thought we had covered every angle of the special news, I learned Meghan was in a sorority in college (kind of scandalous for a royal-to-be, eh?). The best part, though? She was in mine.

I told everyone I knew when I found out and most were impressed. As a basic sorority girl turned full-time adult, I had to relish in this fun fact that brought me back to the easiest and most fun years of my life. I took a second to think about it: I'm a Kappa Kappa Gamma, and so is Meghan, which makes us sisters, and me royalty, right? Totally kidding, but I still can't help but obsess over the fact that Meghan and I share special rituals that not everyone else in the world knows. On top of that, we are both proud holders of the golden key and Fleur-de-lis. Perhaps she'd let me into her Kensington Palace cottage with the Kappa handshake? It could be worth a try someday.

I posed wearing KKG letters and blue on blue for many occasions during my four years at the University of Connecticut, and I'm sure Meghan has too, just at Northwestern University. Pretty cool, right? However, Meghan's resurfaced composite photo had me thinking about my more serious days in the Delta Mu chapter at UConn, where I served as the Vice President of Standards during my sophomore spring and junior fall semesters.

Essentially, I was like a police officer in that position (my friends can definitely attest to this), but I was also a role model and executor of all the rules and regulations the sorority held so dear. I wonder what positions Meghan had in her sorority, and if she took it as seriously as I did. One thing I learned, though, is we didn't have much in common when it came to our education. However, we both ended up executing what we studied once we pulled ourselves out of that "sorority bubble" as I like to call it.

"I had always been the theatre nerd at Northwestern University. I knew I wanted to do acting, but I hated the idea of being this cliche — a girl from LA who decides to be an actress," Meghan told Marie Claire back in 2013. "I wanted more than that, and I had always loved politics, so I ended up changing my major completely, and double-majoring in theatre and international relations."

I personally cannot act, unlike Meghan, who starred on the hit series Suits for the past seven years. I took an entry level drama class sophomore year that I hated for lack of a better word. I went to UConn with a dream of being a journalist in NYC (hey, good for me for making that happen, right?), and I didn't give a hoot (pun intended, one of the Kappa symbols is an owl) about politics until all that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton news was thrown in my face 24/7 as a person who works in media.

Despite the fact that we didn't study the same things in college, there's something satisfying about the fact that England's future princess and I likely did a lot of the same things while there. I'd like to think Meghan sang fun songs during recruitment, met her bridesmaids as they say (although Kate Middleton seems to have already gotten that invite), and participated in the Reading Is Fundamental philanthropy. And even though I'll probably never get to chat with Meghan about her time in Kappa (her life will take a serious turn once she marries Harry in May), it's pretty sweet knowing that we're sisters that have an unspoken bond without ever meeting. And while it may seem cheesy, I'll probably share that detail with everyone for a very long time.
