It’s probably one of the trickiest dress codes to navigate — what does one wear for your first Christmas day with Queen Elizabeth and the royal family? If you’re Kate Middleton, it’s probably a high-neck, lace, navy-blue dress from high street staples Reiss or French Connection. But if you’re Prince Harry’s fiancée Meghan Markle, you reportedly opt for burgundy velvet, courtesy of Canadian clothing brand Club Monaco.

Royal sleuths managed to track down the exact dress worn by Meghan after she appeared going to church in Sandringham on Christmas day. The beady-eyed fans managed to sneak a glimpse of what Meghan was wearing underneath her Sentaler camel coat, which she wore with knee-high beige boots (we think the slouchy knee-boot is becoming to Meghan what the nude court shoe is to Kate Middleton, by the way).

The Club Monaco dress features a modest below the knee skirt, a belted waist, and ruched cap sleeves and is described as the perfect “day to night” dress on the brand’s website. Personally, we don’t think there’s a better choice than a comfy, flattering velvet dress — particularly in a Christmassy hue like burgundy — for making the perfect impression on your new in-laws.

The brand was clearly pleased with the actress’s sartorial choice, writing on Instagram, “A very short-term [#FlashbackFriday] to Christmas Day, when we got a peek at the lovely @MeghanMarkle wearing our velvet Tay dress to visit the royal family.” It’s still in stock on the website, retailing at approximately $298, with a 30 percent discount.

Her choice of brand is unsurprising. The California-born actress turned royal-to-be is known for championing her adopted home of Toronto, where she lived while filming seven series of her hit legal show Suits. She has previously worn pieces by Aritzia, Mackage and Line the Label, with the Meghan-effect often causing the brand’s websites to crash and items to sell out, much like her future sister-in-law, Kate.
