She is arguably one of the most successful actresses of all time, but Meg Ryan shares she had no interest in making a career out of acting when she was a teenager!
"My main aim, at 18, was to become a journalist," says the 52-year-old. "I only started acting - in commercials - to pay my way through college in New York."
Despite her lack of passion for the profession, Ryan found work quickly, even though she claims to have been "intimidated" by everyone around her.
"I was 19 when I was in my first film, 'Rich And Famous,'" says the star. "I played Candice Bergen's daughter and only had about ten lines, which I would repeat constantly every night."
Her flight to Los Angeles for the film was the first time Ryan had been on a plane, which made the experience even more nerve-racking for the young actress.
"I was intimidated by everyone in those days," says Ryan. "If you ever see the film, you will see me shaking in every scene. I did not understand actors. It was overwhelming."
Even now, after three decades in the business, the "Sleepless in Seattle" star struggles with the spotlight.
"I've always had mixed feelings about fame. It means that you live out your worst moments in the public eye," she shares with The Sun.
"I also learned that however successful you might be, you are always going to miss out on something."
Ryan is currently guiding her 21-year-old son Jack Quaid, with ex-husband Dennis Quaid, through the early stages of fame. The actor got his big break in the 2012 action film "The Hunger Games."
The star is also mom to a 9-year-old daughter whom she adopted from China in 2006 and has been in a relationship with musician John Mellencamp since 2010.
