There’s going to be one thing missing from the Olympics this year, and that’s Matt Lauer. The former Today star has been an anchor at the worldwide sporting event in the past, but following his abrupt firing from the talk show, we won’t be seeing him at the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea the next few weeks.

Matt previously attended the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, plus many more, so it’s definitely going be weird not seeing him on our small screens this year.

However, he left the hosting gig in good hands. Taking his place will be his former co-anchor Savannah Guthrie as well as the newest co-anchor, Hoda Kotb! Hoda gushed about working at the Olympics in a new interview with USA Today, and revealed what she can’t wait for. “Hanging with the athletes, watching them in their critical moment when they’re about to be on a box of Wheaties and are about to be a household name,” she said.

Savannah added, “How many times do you get to actually witness someone’s dream coming true, and you are right there in the moment? That’s incredible, and we’re going to be witnesses to it. It’s contagious, and you get caught up in it. When you are at an event, and we win gold and they play our national anthem, it’s a goosebumps moment every time.”

Katie Couric will even co-host the event in place of Matt, and revealed in an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly that Hoda and Savannah have nothing to fear! “I did it for 15 long years and really loved it, but it’s nice to pass the torch,” she shared.

And even though Savannah had a hard time with Matt’s firing, she’s determined to the do her best for the Today show at the Olympics as well as every morning! When asked how she coped with his exit, she replied, “I think you saw what I was going through. We had a really great and close relationship with Matt. He was our friend and colleague. We woke up to news that was shocking, just like everyone who turned on the show every day. Man, it’s hard to get through something like that. We all try to keep our eye on the ball and try to manage this the best we can, with compassion and integrity and truth and honesty and authenticity, and that’s all I know how to do. I hope we are succeeding.” We can’t wait to watch these women at the Olympics!
