So Sweet: Matt Damon Remembers Co-Star Robin Williams 20 Years After 'Good Will Hunting'

Matt Damon is remembering the late Robin Williams nearly three years after his untimely death.

At the 2017 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 8, the actor paid tribute to his Good Will Hunting co-star and the iconic Hollywood star in a touching red carpet interview.

Matt told interviewer Ryan Seacrest that he is so grateful to have had been able to work with Robin on the 1997 film. The blockbuster earned himself and BFF Ben Affleck the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay that year.

“Oh, man, [I have] a lot of Robin Williams memories, good memories of him. And Ben said recently, it's weird, we always felt like we were going to, we had this incredible debt to pay him back,” Matt, 46, said. Robin sadly committed suicide at age 63 in August 2014.

“And we thought there would be time to do that and just the abruptness of somebody leaving like that, that realization comes that you're never going to be able to pay back this incredible thing done for you," he continued. “That movie got made because Robin said he wanted to do it. That changed the trajectory of our careers completely, forever.”

The Good Will Hunting cast was very close during the time of filming. In a recent candid interview, Minnie Driver — who played Will's love interest Skylar in the film — revealed the movie's co-creators, Matt and Ben, stuck up for her when the producers thought she wasn't "hot enough" for the part.

"[They] fought very hard for me to play that role," she revealed. "I am grateful to them until this day."
