“The Talk” welcomed aboard the cast of “The Love Boat” 27 years after the hit series ended its 10-year run.
Cast mates Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Fred Grandy, Lauren Tewes, and Jill Whelan discussed their initial surprise at the success of the series and what it was like working with each other.
"I didn't think we'd even get through the pilot," Grandy, who played Burl "Gopher" Smith, confessed on the show. "The first pilot that we did, we did over Christmas. But nobody thought it would go beyond that. I mean, as Gavin pointed out, the critics hated it. They said it would sink like the Titanic."
The network even placed the series in a tough time slot, 10 o’clock on Saturday night, which Grandy said is normally “the graveyard shift.”
But the show refused to run aground and soon began beating its competitors like "Kojak" and "The Carol Burnett Show." “We said, 'you know, something might be going on here,'" said Grandy. "Gavin, of course, always believed, from the very first day."
It’s fitting that Gavin, who played ship captain Merrill Stubing, would be the one to have faith in the series. But the veteran actor attests that it was the entire cast and crew's hard work that helped the show stay afloat in the early days.
"It was a gift to work with them," Gavin said of his coworkers. "They all had a specific talent."
"The Talk" co-hosts Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Sara Gilbert, Sheryl Underwood, and Aisha Tyler got in on the fun by dressing up as some of the show’s most famous characters. And special guest Charo, who appeared on the Aaron Spelling show eight times over its 10 seasons, surprised the cast by joining them set.
