Kelly Clarkson Didn’t Attend the 2017 Grammys for a Very Special Reason — Find out Here!

Kelly Clarkson was truly missed at the 2017 Grammys — but the star was absent for good reason!

The singer was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance this year for her “Piece by Piece” performance on American Idol, and was up against Beyoncé (“Hold Up”), Adele (“Hello”), Justin Bieber (“Love Yourself”) and Ariana Grande (“Dangerous Woman”). Adele ended up taking home the Grammy, and Kelly was nowhere in the audience.

“Congrats @Adele on Pop Solo Performance #Grammys2017… and sorry fans, I’m recording and not in LA for Grammys! Next year ?#NewAlbum2017,” the 34-year-old wrote on Twitter during the show on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Fans were mostly surprised by Kelly’s failure to attend the ceremony considering she shared a video of herself thanking fans for the nomination days prior. During the cute clip on American Idol‘s Facebook page, the former winner even revealed she would be taking her two-year-old daughter, River Rose, as her date to the award show! Talk about a last minute cancellation.

“Hey, what’s up, Idol fans? Kelly Clarkson here!” she said on Friday, February 10. “I am so excited that I got nominated for the Grammys that I sang Piece by Piece live on Idol, the last show, and it’s such a nice bookend for me, so thank y’all so much for the support for like, 15 years!”

“I’m so excited, I’m taking my two-year-old, because I wrote the song for her… well, and you,” Kelly continued before getting distracted by someone off-camera. “That’s my husband, [Brandon Blackstock], he’s standing right there. All right, later!”

In November 2016, the music icon was proud to tell her followers about her upcoming single album. “I’m working on my new album now. We are hoping the single will be in April, and then the album in June,” she said at the time. “It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done. It’s the first time I got to pick my label, because I just got out of my American Idol contract. I’ve been dying to make this record since Idol.”

“We’re still working on it, but we have a good batch of songs already and I can’t wait to sing them live,” the mom-of-two added. “They’re amazing. After having a career for so long, it’s so weird that nobody knows [my sound] yet, so it’s going to be so good. It’s definitely a different chapter.”
