James Rebhorn, known for his role as Claire Danes' father in the Showtime thriller Homeland, has passed away from skin cancer. He was 65.
The actor had reportedly been battling melanoma since 1992, but kept working up until January of this year. He passed at his home in South Orange, N.J.
Apart from his reoccurring role on Homeland, Rebhorn appeared on many television shows including White Collar, Law & Order and Seinfeld (he played the D.A. who sent the gang to jail in the series' final episode).
He also portrayed memorable supporting characters in major films such as Meet the Parents, Independence Day, My Cousin Vinny, Basic Instinct and Cold Mountain.
Rebhorn joked that his roles often required him to wear a suit, whether he served as secretary of defense in 1996's Independence Day or as the head of the FBI's white collar crime unit on USA's White Collar.
The Philadelphia native was also a frequent fixture on stage, often working with the Roundabout Theater Company, but also appearing on Broadway in Twelve Angry Men, Prelude to a Kiss and Our Town.
In a 2007 interview, Rebhorn said he tries to do one play every year because he enjoys the immediate feedback from a live audience.
He is survived by wife Rebecca and daughters Hannah and Emma.
