Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's split may have been a shock to some, but in reality the couple separated long before announcing their "conscious uncoupling" to the public.
In a new interview, Gwyneth, 42, revealed she and Chris, 37, broke up a year before she wrote about their decision to call it quits after 10 years of marriage on her lifestyle website, Goop, in March 2014.
Following the quiet breakup, the actress admitted she sought advice from her 'Mortdecai' costar Johnny Depp — who went through his own split with longtime partner Vanessa Paradis in 2012 — on how to deal with the change in her relationship status.

"Nobody knew what Chris and I had been going through, so I didn't say, ‘Hey, this is what's happening,' but I did ask him mostly children-centric questions, like, ‘How is it on them?' and ‘How did you do it?'" Gwyneth said.

As for their decision to use the term "conscious uncoupling" to describe their split? The mom-of-two said she could care less that the public disliked their choice of words.
"OK, you can make fun of the term or whatever. I didn't invent it," she told Australia's 'Marie Claire' magazine.
