'Grey's Anatomy' Stars' Kids: Ellen Pompeo's Family, More

If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, you could probably recite the iconic show’s countless seasons by heart. But did you know the hit drama’s biggest stars like Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers and more are the proud parents of their kids? It’s time you meet the beloved cast’s famous families.

Considering plenty of the actors were starting their families at the time they were starring on Grey’s, it’s quite impressive how they were able to juggle their hectic Hollywood schedules with their lives as doting moms and dads. Ellen once opened up about the “challenging” struggle of being a mother while portraying the lead role of Meredith Grey.

“I have my days where I feel really guilty that I’ve been here every day if I have to work a lot,” she previously told Entertainment Tonight. “But the truth is, I’m in a very blessed situation — I am so lucky.”

The Station 19 alum — who shares kids Stella, Sienna and Eli with husband Chris Ivery — said she couldn’t feel more “fortunate” to be an actress and parent.

“All working moms have their challenges and I’m incredibly lucky compared to most,” Ellen explained. “I can afford help and I’m fortunate where I can bring her. I’ve got my little challenges, but they’re insignificant compared to what real working moms go through.”

Ellen announced she was leaving the series after 19 seasons in November 2022. She appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show the following month to discuss the big news.

“I have a lot that I’m doing. I have three kids and so I take care of them, and it’s really important for me to be around for them and be more present for them,” the Golden Globe nominee shared.

While Ellen and other past and present cast members like Chandra Wilson, Jesse Williams and others went on to have children, Sandra Oh focused on her career. Still, the Killing Eve star — who was married to ex-husband Alexander Payne from 2003 to 2006 — once revealed she actually considered a life as a single mom.

“I went through that period, I’d say in my mid to late 30s into 40, where it was like, ‘I make a great living and I could do this on my own,'” she shared with Marie Claire. “And I didn’t.”

Fortunately, Sandra doesn’t feel like she’s missing out on much thanks to her family and all her close pals. “I have an extremely fulfilling life as an aunt, not only to my nieces and nephews, but also to a lot of my friends’ children,” she dished.

Justin Chambers — Dr. Alex Karev

Justin and his wife, Keisha Chambers, got married in 1993. The handsome hunk and the former model agency booker became proud parents for the first time when eldest daughter Isabella arrived in 1994. The couple wasted no time expanding their brood as they welcomed twin daughters Maya and Kaila in 1997, as well as daughter Eva in 1999 and son Jackson in 2002.

Aside from their children, Justin and Keisha also have a couple of rescue dogs too!

Patrick Dempsey — Dr. Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd

While Patrick Dempsey was previously married to late wife Rocky Parker from 1987 to 1994, the former couple never had any children together. However, he became a proud dad after he walked down the aisle with Jillian Fink in 1999. Together, the pair welcomed daughter Talula in 2002, followed by twin sons Darby and Sullivan in 2007.

Kevin McKidd — Owen Hunt

Kevin McKidd and his former wife, Jane Parker, tied the knot in 1999, but were divorced in 2017. Although they’re no longer together, they became the loving mom and dad to kids Joseph and Iona throughout their marriage.

The actor expanded his brood when he welcomed youngest son Aiden alongside second wife Arielle Goldrath in 2018. They also welcomed daughter Nava in July 2019. The couple announced their split on social media in July 2022.

Katherine Heigl — Izzie Stevens

Katherine Heigl made her love official with husband Josh Kelley in 2007. In late 2009, the pair started their family when they adopted daughter Nancy Leigh. Years later, Katherine and Josh adopted their second daughter, Adalaide, in 2012.

The 27 Dresses alum completed her family when she gave birth to her and Josh’s son, Joshua Bishop, in 2016.
