'Grey's Anatomy' Star Chandra Wilson Reveals Her Daughter's Mysterious Disease

Chandra Wilson is solving medical mysteries on and off-screen!

The 47-year-old Grey’s Anatomy star — who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey on the drama — recently revealed her daughter Sarina McFarlane, 23, is battling a mysterious disease that she was diagnosed with at age 16.

“She would get these terrible bouts of vomiting and stabbing abdominal pains,” Chandra told People in a new interview. “I thought, ‘This was crazy.’ Something was wrong with my daughter, and nobody could tell me what it was.”

But, her daughter’s symptoms, unfortunately, weren’t the worst part of this ordeal for the actress — sadly, Sarina’s doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her. This continued for 10 months and Sarina was hospitalized several times for dehydration and vomiting.

“I found myself tracking what foods she was eating, where we were, tracking all this information myself,” Chandra explained. “Each hospital visit, I would put the info into a binder. By month eight, I was walking around with this gigantic binder.”

Finally, in 2010, Sarina was diagnosed with mitochondrial dysfunction and cyclic vomiting syndrome, two incurable diseases that cause nausea and extreme exhaustion. Sarina told People she isn’t letting her illness affect her positive outlook on life.

“People in high school thought I was throwing up because I was trying to lose weight,” she said. “I could be sad about it, but it’s going to come back anyway.”
