The Meanings Behind George and Amal Clooney’s Twins’ Names Will Make You Love Them Even More!

Finally, some happy news: George and Amal Clooney have welcomed their twins, a girl named Ella and a boy named Alexander!

While we’ve come to expect Hollywood power couples to choose baby names that are somewhat out of the ordinary for their genetically blessed offspring, the Clooneys have bucked this trend by opting for two classic, popular names that are likely to always remain in fashion. Perhaps they’ve saved something a little less conventional for the middle names?

A traditional English name, Ella was originally a shortened form of Eleanor or Ellen and means “light” (though some sources define it as “fairy woman,” based on the Old English).

Alexander, meanwhile, comes from the Greek and means “defender of man,” harking back to Alexander the Great. According to BabyCentre, it was the 16th most popular name for baby boys in the UK — where George and Amal will raise their twins! — last year. Could the “Clooney effect” see it spike in popularity even further this year? (It’s also Prince George’s middle name if that sways you…)

“Ella and Alexander are both fashionable, classic names that have been around for centuries, yet rank high on the popularity list right now,” Pamela Redmond Satran, founder of baby-naming site Nameberry told Harper’s Bazaar. “They’re lovely names that are compatible without being too matchy for twins. Definitely no crazy celebrity baby names here.”
