Garry Shandling’s Cause of Death Revealed Seven Months After His Passing

Garry Shandling‘s cause of death has been revealed, seven months after his passing.

The comedian — who died at age 66 on Thursday, March 24 — passed away from pulmonary thrombosis when a blood clot traveled from his leg into his lungs, according to an LA County Coroner’s Office autopsy report obtained by TMZ.

The documents, released on Tuesday, Dec. 27, additionally confirmed Garry had an enlarged heart. The autopsy listed the star’s death as “natural” and an “accident.”

The day before he died, “[Garry] complained of leg pain and shortness of breath,” according to the report. “[He] was told by a friend to go to the doctor.”

The autopsy documents further showed Garry had Xanax and opiate painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone in his body at the time of his passing.

Gerry reportedly called 911 from his home on the morning of his death “because he could not breathe and collapsed while on the phone.” The LA fire department responded to his medical emergency request and rushed him to St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Following his sudden death, stars including Jimmy Kimmel, Kathy Griffin, Amy Schumer and Ricky Gervais paid tribute to Garry on social media.

“Garry was as kind and generous as he was funny and that is saying a lot,” Jimmy wrote on Twitter. “I loved him. I’ll miss our talks the most,” Kathy similarly posted.

“Goodbye Gary, thank you for your kindness and your generosity and for making me laugh so damn much,” Amy posted. “RIP, the great Garry Shandling. Surely, one of the most influential comedians of a generation,” Ricky wrote on Twitter.

Throughout his showbiz career, Garry worked as stand-up comedian, actor, writer and producer.

He was most known for his performances on It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show and served as a frequent guest-host on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

He additionally wrote an episode of the hit 1970s series, Welcome Back, Kotter, which starred John Travolta.

Garry never married nor had any children during his lifetime.
