Venice, Italy, is one of the most romantic places in the world, and it served as the perfect backdrop for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi to escape the hustle and bustle of LA.
“They seemed really relaxed and they were enjoying each other’s company,” one onlooker tells Closer, who caught a glimpse of the blissed-out lovebirds right before they drifted around the bend on an intimate gondola ride.
It's clear that after a rocky few months — including Portia’s 30-day return to rehab at Passages Malibu for what a source says were alcohol and drug issues — the couple have totally reconnected.
So much so that Ellen, 56, and Portia, 41, are excitedly planning a festive second wedding on their sixth anniversary next month in Portia’s homeland of Australia. Says the source, “Ellen wants to honor Portia, her struggles and their love together.”
After the rehab scare, it's Ellen's top priority to show her wife she knows just how important she is. "I love her so much it kills me," the talk show host has said.
“Ellen really feels she took her eye off the ball of her marriage, getting wrapped up in projects and letting Portia go her own way,” says a close friend. “And she didn’t even believe they had marital problems until they were staring her in the face.”

As a result of therapy, the couple has learned how to communicate more effectively. Says a friend, “Ellen's now making it a point to talk openly to Portia about her feelings, and to get Portia to open up about what she’s going through.”
