2000: Love at First Sight

Portia first met Ellen back in 2000 during a photo shoot. However, she didn't pursue the relationship right away.

"It took me three years to actually tell her how I felt about her, because I was on Ally McBeal at the time and wasn't living as an openly gay person," Portia said on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009. "I was closeted and very, very afraid that if I talked about being gay it would be the end of my career. So I wasn't about to date the most famous lesbian in the world."

2004: They're Official!

After running into each other at VH1's Big in 04 awards, they decided to take things to the next level and start dating officially. "When I saw her again that night [at the VH1 awards show] we started talking and that’s that," Portia said at the time. "We just were kind of supposed to be together."

2005: Home Sweet Home

The couple moved into a two-bedroom house together in LA and started wearing matching platinum bands on their left ring fingers. “If it were legal, we would be married, but it’s not legal,” Ellen said at the time.

2007: Doggy Drama

The couple got into a dispute with an animal shelter, which Ellen tearfully spoke about on her show. Both she and Portia adopted a dog named Iggy, but they later gave the dog to Ellen's hairstylist when the dog didn't get along with the couple's three cats.

However, since the couple signed an agreement saying they wouldn't re-home the dog, the shelter came and took the dog away from the hairstylist's family.
"[Ellen and Portia] were wrong by not reading the agreement," a spokesperson for the shelter said at the time.

2008: Wedding Bells!

When California overturned a ban on gay marriage, Ellen announced on her show that she and Portia were getting married! They tied the knot on Aug. 16, 2008.

2009: Married With (No) Children

“I don’t think we’re going to have kids,” Ellen told AOL Television that year. “We have animals, and we love them. And, you know, we are brand new aunts. Her brother and his wife just had a baby girl who’s a month old now, and it’s fun to be a part of that.”

2010: Opening Up

When Portia released her memoir, Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain, she went on Ellen's show to talk about it. In the book, Portia opened up about her eating disorder, which shocked Ellen.

"When I read her book and learned about the self-loathing and how much she hated herself it shocked me and broke my heart," Ellen said on her show. "I had no idea how much she had hated herself."

2011: New Home

The couple sold their 9,200-square-foot Beverly Hills home for $45 million and bought Brad Pitt's old Malibu home for $12 million. They also announced plans to open a vegan restaurant together.

2013: Marriage Troubles?

After rumors started swirling about their marriage being on the rocks, Ellen spoke out to set the record straight. "It's so ridiculous to me," she said on her show. "There's not one ounce of truth to any of it. I'm very happily married. In fact, the only thing we ever argue about is who loves who more."

2015: "We're Madly in Love!"

Ellen went on Howard Sten's radio show to talk about rumors that she and Portia were getting a divorce. "We don't know anything about [the rumors] until somebody tells us," she said. "I don't know why they do this. We're kind of flattered… We really don't almost break up, we don't fight, we're madly in love, and I guess it's boring."

2016: "We're So Lucky!"

The couple denied divorce rumors again, with Portia reiterating how strong their relationship is. "We're just really good friends and we talk about everything, and we never ever, ever lie to each other, like, not even the tiniest lies," she said at the time. "She's just so awesome! Who wouldn't want to be with Ellen all the time?"

"We're so lucky," Ellen said that same year.

2017: Wedded Bliss

The couple looked happy and in love when they attended the People's Choice Awards in January 2017 where Ellen gushed about Portia's looks. "It's such an accident because she normally doesn't look beautiful like that," Ellen joked.

2017: The Breakup

In summer 2017, In Touch Weekly revealed Ellen and Portia were "breaking up" and headed for divorce after nine years of marriage.

"Portia’s ring has been off for a while now, and though she would occasionally slip it on to show Ellen she was trying, that’s over now… There’s no turning back. It’s just a matter of time before the whole world knows," a insider told the magazine.
