Melissa Mathison, a screenwriter for the hit 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and the ex-wife of actor Harrison Ford, has sadly died. She was 65-years-old.
Melissa passed away from complications of neuroendocrine cancer in LA on Wednesday, Nov. 4, her sister Melinda Johnson confirmed to Entertainment Weekly.

“Melissa had a heart that shined with generosity and love and burned as bright as the heart she gave E.T.," the movie's director and producer Steven Spielberg said of his late friend and colleague — who earned an Oscar nomination for her work on E.T. — in a statement to the entertainment news outlet.

The famed screenwriter — who has two children, Malcolm Carswell Ford and Georgia Ford, with ex-husband Harrison, whom she was married to from 1983 until 2004 — also worked on movies The Escape Artist, Twilight Zone: The Movie, The Indian in the Cupboard and The BFG.

After playing Elliot's little sister, Drew, 42, rose to fame with adult roles in Poison Ivy, Never Been Kissed, The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Charlie's Angels. The actress and producer — who is mom to daughters Olive and Frankie — most recently starred in films He's Just Not That Into You, Everybody's Fine, Going the Distance and Blended.
