Actress Melissa McCarthy rarely hears rejection when it comes to her career nowadays, but the Mike & Molly star was faced with a chorus of "no's" when she set out to find an Oscar dress in 2012.
Nominated for her role in the wedding comedy Bridesmaids, the 43-year-old reveals she searched and searched for the perfect gown to no avail. "When I go shopping, most of the time I'm disappointed," admits Melissa.
"Two Oscars ago, I couldn't find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers — very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people — and they all said no," she shares.
The negative experience inspired Melissa to create her own plus-size clothing line with couturier Daniella Pearl, the co-designer of her 2011 Emmys dress!
The mom-of-two, who studied clothing and textiles in college, previously told The Hollywood Reporter, “Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible,” admitting she either looks like "a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker."
And although she now graces best-dressed lists, Melissa tells Redbook magazine she wasn't always fashion-conscious!

“I wore white kabuki makeup, had blue-black hair [in college]," the Tammy star confesses. "At one point I shaved an inch and a half around my hairline and continued the white makeup up so it made my head look slightly deformed.”
But the comedienne got a kick out of her unique style. “I thought it was hilarious...I was never sullen. I was a terrible punk," she says.
