Our hearts are absolutely broken! David Cassidy has passed away on Nov. 21 from organ failure. The 67-year-old was “surrounded by those he loved,” in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to a statement from his family to People.

“On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy,” said the statement. “David died with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years.”

David was admitted to intensive care one week before his death as his liver and kidney began to fail. He was quickly put into a coma, and though his family feared he would never come out, he did wake up last Saturday. It sounds like the icon’s situation never improved, and unfortunately death was his only relief from his suffering.

David opened up about abusing alcohol in 2008, which likely contributed to his kidney and liver ailments. In 2014, he was still struggling with sobriety and checked himself into rehab. Though his addictions have caused strain in his family, they were all present for him during his final days.

David rose to fame for playing Keith on The Partridge Family in the 1970s. Though many teen stars grow to resent the show that made them, David never did. “It was fascinating how quickly it evolved, just by fate,” he told NJ.com in 2011. “It was obviously God’s intent. I feel very, very fortunate to have had all of the stars align to do that. Because I was able to not only become very successful but to touch people’s lives and bring light into their lives.”
