She grew up on one of TV's most beloved sitcoms, but to Erin Murphy, who played Tabitha Stephens on Bewitched, it wasn't just a job. It was a second home.
“My childhood on set was really normal for me. I mean it seemed normal," Erin, now 50, tells Closer of her Hollywood youth. "I went to work, I didn’t go to school...that seemed normal. But then when the show was over, it was really fun to do things like cheerleading and to be a normal kid.”
The blonde beauty, who joined the hit show in 1966 — just before her second birthday — admits she had no idea how famous her adult co-stars were until years later. "It’s funny looking back on it. I just knew everyone there like they were just family members and co-workers," she says. "I loved [Agnes Moorehead] like a grandma. I didn’t know she was in Citizen Kane."
And starring on a show about magic was an extra treat for the kid actor. “It was fun watching them set up all [that]," Erin reveals. "It was fun when an animal came on the show, another kid actor guest-starred. I really had a great time with it.”
Despite being the only child on set, Erin's co-stars certainly didn't treat her like one! “I think they acted like I was a grown-up," she says, remembering that they didn't watch their language around her. “I have a really dirty sense of humor that I got from Ms. [Elizabeth] Montgomery," she tells Closer with a laugh.
Describing her TV mom as a "guys' girl," the former Fox Reality Channel correspondent confesses that Elizabeth had the naughtiest vocabulary. "She loved horse-racing and drinking...she was just fun!”
After the show ended in 1972, Erin's family moved to Orange County and she tried out a variety of different occupations behind the camera, including work as a makeup artist. Thanks to her experience in the field, she's got some fabulous beauty tips for women over 50!
“Mainly, I think it’s about being happy and being comfortable in your skin," she tells Closer of her best beauty secret, but also stresses the importance of the right amount of makeup. "From working on other people’s faces, I see what looks good and what doesn’t...People wear too much and it makes them look older.”
Though the actress has many projects in the works, her most exciting may be her co-ownership of Slim Chillers, a company that sells martini-flavored popsicles. With only 100 calories, it sounds like the perfect warm weather treat!
And in Bewitched news: to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary this month, Erin will be hosting a 50-episode marathon on Antenna TV, Sept. 20. So make sure to tune-in!
