It was a cold and blustery day in Manhattan on Jan. 19. But a few New Yorkers got a heartwarming sight: supermodel Christie Brinkley, 61, lunching at Italian restaurant Nello and flashing her trademark smile for photographers.
Only one thing was missing from the picture: Christie’s boyfriend, rocker John Mellencamp.
The fact that Christie and John haven’t been photographed together in over two months (when they spent a romantic November getaway at John’s Daufuskie Island, S.C., home) has raised questions about the status of their once-hot relationship.

But insiders tell Closer that there’s a good reason for the separation — the music legend is hard at work on a new album.
“John’s been working with Carlene Carter on an album of duets, along with writing and making demo recordings for a solo album,” says a source. “He feels he’s in a major creative mode right now and is working night and day [in his Bloomington, Ind., studio].”
