Nine months after Charlize Theron called it quits with boyfriend Sean Penn, the actress has candidly opened up about their breakup — and assured fans she didn't end things by suddenly and unexpectedly ceasing all communication with the actor.
"There is this need to sensationalize things," Charlize, 40, said of recent reports she "ghosted" Sean, 55, while ending their courtship last June. "When you leave a relationship there has to be some f---ing crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f---ing ghosting thing, like literally I still don't even know what it is."

"It's just its own beast. We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That's it," the Mad Max: Fury Road star added in her interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Charlize and Sean reportedly began dating in 2013 and later split in June 2015. During her sit-down with the Wall Street Journal, the actress additionally revealed Sean was "very supportive" of her decision to adopt a second child, daughter August, while they were dating.

"When you're with somebody and it comes to kids, you can't bulls--t. And so I was always very honest with Sean that I wanted to have more kids. And he was very supportive," Charlize, who is also a mom to a four-year-old adopted son, Jackson, said.
"There was an understanding that I was a single mom with a very young boy who I had to put in a situation where he understood that 'mommy' dates but that he does not have a father, you know what I mean? You have to be very careful and very honest about that stuff. And Sean was great with all of that."
