From Prince Harry to Ellen DeGeneres, These Celebs Looked Happy in Photos But Were Secretly Battling Depression

Although it’s one of the most common disorders, people are always surprised when they learn about celebrities with depression. After all, on the surface, the life of a famous person seems quite cushy in comparison to the average person’s. But many stars have revealed that failed relationships, career regrets, and sometimes just a deep, unwavering unhappiness have forced them to seek professional help.

Prince Harry surprised everyone earlier this year when the usually private prince opened up about his struggles with depression. He said that he had “shut down” his emotions after the 1997 death of his mother, Princess Diana.

“My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum, because why would that help,” he said in a 2017 interview with The Telegraph.

The 32-year-old’s habit of bottling his emotions later started manifesting into strange disorders as he got older, mainly anxiety and even anger.

“During those years I took up boxing, because everyone was saying boxing is good for you and it’s a really good way of letting out aggression,” he revealed. “And that really saved me because I was on the verge of punching someone, so being able to punch someone who had pads was certainly easier.”

The young royal says he’s now in a better place thanks to seeing several therapists and talking about his issues with friends and family.

“The experience I have had is that once you start talking about it, you realize that actually, you’re part of quite a big club,” he said. “Then [I] started to have a few conversations and actually all of a sudden, all of this grief that I have never processed started to come to the
forefront and I was like, there is actually a lot of stuff here that I need to deal with.”
