The brother of Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles, died after sustaining a serious head injury following a fall in New York City, officials announced Wednesday.
In a statement released by Clarence House, Camilla and Charles were said to be "utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss" of her 62-year-old brother Mark Shand.
The travel writer had been attending an auction at Sotheby's in New York when the incident occurred. He reportedly slipped while lighting a cigarette outside of an after show party at the Diamond Horseshoe nightclub.
According to reports, the auction was being held to benefit a variety of charities including the Elephant Family, which is devoted to saving the endangered Asian elephant and for which Mark served as chairman.
He was the youngest child of Major Bruce Shand and Rosalind Maud Cubitt and is survived by sisters Camilla and Annabel Elliot.
