In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, on newsstands now, Bindi Irwin opens up about her true purpose, continuing her father’s legacy, and what is next after Dancing with the Stars wraps.
From the start of this year’s season of Dancing with the Stars, Bindi has been the contestant to beat. Fans admire Bindi not just for her dancing, but also for her sweetness and poise. Despite having grown up in the spotlight, she’s still focused on what matters most. “I want to truly share my message of conservation and hopefully inspire others. No matter what I do, I just want to make sure that is always at the forefront.”

“She’s so unique,” Derek Hough tells Closer of his dance partner. “It’s just so rare to find someone who knows who they are and knows their purpose and has energy that’s just infectious and inspiring.”

“I feel like my dad is still with us,” she confides to Closer. Bindi’s dad, the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, tragically died at age 44 in 2006 after being stabbed by a stingray. That “is something I never really talked about or dwelled on before,” Bindi confides to Closer. “I feel like I’m ready to share my story.”

“I feel closest to my dad when I’m with my family,” says Bindi, whose mom, Terri, and brother, Robert, traveled to LA to support her. “I think that as a family we try to make sure that his legacy continues. I really hope that Dad would be proud.”

Looking to the future, Bindi—who’s dating Chandler Powell, a 19-year-old American wakeboarder—might be spending more time in the United States. “I love coming to visit, because my mum’s family is from Oregon,” she shares. “America always feels like a second home for me,” she says, adding that “Australia and the Australia Zoo” will always have her heart.
