In a candid new interview, Billy admitted he was just getting used to his new Today's Take gig when he left the daytime talk show in October 2016.
"I was kind of bopping along, and I don’t know if it was God or what that said, 'OK, you’ve developed. You’re a pretty good guy. Let’s see how you handle this.' And ka-boom! It all comes apart," the 45-year-old recently told People.
Billy's departure from Today followed the surprise public release of an Access Hollywood tape of now-President Donald Trump and the journalist making lewd comments during a 2005 interview.
Today, Billy admitted he still has no idea who leaked the tape but "would have welcomed addressing the [Today] audience," before he was let go from the show.
"[Watching that video left me] totally and completely gutted. Looking back upon what was said on that bus, I wish I had changed the topic," he said. "[Donald] liked TV and competition. I could’ve said, 'Can you believe the ratings on whatever?' But I didn’t have the strength of character to do it."
Billy additionally revealed he still keeps in touch with a few of his Today co-stars — including Matt Lauer who wished him "the very past" upon his exit — in the wake of his firing. The father-of-three said he recently caught up with Matt over lunch and was able to visit Hoda Kotb's new baby girl, Haley Joy. So cute!
Now, Billy is focused on what's ahead — and confessed he's already working on a new TV project. Best of luck, Billy!
