Betty White Reacts to Mary Tyler Moore’s Death: “She Was Special”

Betty White has reacted to the death of her dear friend and former co-star, Mary Tyler Moore.

The 95-year-old took to Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 26 to share a sweet throwback photo of herself with Mary, her second husband, Grant Tinker, and Betty’s late husband, Allen Luden.

“Mary Tyler Moore, Grant Tinker, Allen Ludden and I had some of the best times of my life together. She was special,” The Golden Girls star captioned the snapshot. So sweet, Betty.

Betty’s post comes as a surprise considering in the hours following Mary’s tragic death at age 80 on Wednesday, Jan. 25, entertainment news outlet [Hollywood Life](http://hollywoodlife.com/2017/01/25/betty-white-upset-mary-tyler-moore-death-not-doing-interviews/?utmsource=social&utmcampaign=partner-bauer&utmmedium=social)_ reached out to Betty for a comment — but the star’s rep said she was “too upset” to speak about The Mary Tyler Moore star‘s passing at the time.

“Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine,” her longtime rep, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed to TMZ.

“A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile,” Buxbaum continued.

Earlier on Wednesday, TMZ reported Mary was in “grave condition” in a Connecticut hospital. Prior to her death, the actress battled several health issues in her later years. She underwent brain surgery in 2011 and additionally suffered from diabetes.

In a 2014 interview with Closer Weekly, Betty commented on Mary’s ailing health. “Her eyesight is what the big problem is right now,” she said at the time.

Betty isn’t the only star who reacted to Mary’s unfortunate passing. Shorly after her death, Oprah Winfrey gave an emotional interview about her relationship with the late star.

“I respected and admired her business acumen, her passion and compassion for all life, and most importantly, the values espoused through her storytelling. I thank her for being a light that shined so brightly, it let me see myself in her,” the 62-year-old media mogul said.
