What boundaries would you cross for love?
Author Ryan Winfield teeters these boundaries in his new romance novel Jane's Melody.
Closer Weekly caught up with the sexy New York Times best-selling author to talk about what inspires his novels, his love life, and what it's like being compared to Nicholas Sparks.
Jane Melody is 40-year-old woman who falls in love with a much younger man! Were you inspired by anything that happened in your own life when writing this novel?
There is a lot of Jane in me and Caleb in me and even some of the other supporting characters. So yes there is a lot of real experience in there, I leave it to the reader to try and discover what.
You write about love and romance. Are you married or dating?
I’m engaged to the most wonderful woman in the world! We have been engaged for four years and I dedicated my first book South of Bixby Bridge to her. Her name is Bridgett and we live together in a loft in Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle!
Since you do write romance novels do you consider yourself extra romantic to Bridgett?
You would have to ask her! I may put a little too much on a page. I will say research is my favorite thing about writing in this genre!
What's the most romantic thing you've ever done for Bridgett?
To celebrate her last birthday I took her to Iceland! She loves waterfalls and the country. We drove around the entire Island which was very romantic.
As it turns out it was right at the cuts of winter and the north part of the island can be quite treacherous. We actually had several misadventures that could have killed us but after we made our way around and through the mess of it we were in massive need of spa time. Overall I thought it was a very romantic and connecting trip for us.
Wow! So you are both very adventurous?
We are! I travel a lot for research for my writing because I have to go get inspiration. Writing is a very visual process for me. So yes we do go on a lot of adventures. We have done a 17-country train trip through Europe with just backpacks and carry-ons.
So Bridgett inspires you too?
Yes definitely, there are private moments that only she would recognize and maybe I put them in for that reason!
You seem so romantic! I'm sure all your guy friends flock to you for advice!
I do have friends that ask for my advice but I don’t know if it’s so much because I write love stories, as I appear to be so happy in my relationship with Bridgett!
I have had friends that have married and divorced in the time that we have been engaged and I do talk to people about that but I think it’s more of the result of them seeing our life and the fruits of how we are living our life verses what I write about.
You sound so happy when you talk about her! Any advice for singles out there looking for the one?
Stop looking. This is the advice I give my friends, which is to stop actually looking to fix your life by coupling with someone else.
My experience is that when you retreat from that and start focusing on your own life and doing things that interest you by expanding your experiences and your skill set.
When you stop looking and searching, it appears right there in front of you.
That’s just how my experience has been and I suggest people to stop dating and to find a hobby and I think you will meet them when the time is right.
Talking about advice-- have you ever gotten any advice from Nicholas Sparks?
I haven’t met him. I would love to talk to him as I’m a fan of his writing and of his work.
You are compared to him a lot!
I’m flattered. I love Nicholas Sparks! His work is very different to mine though and the comparison probably comes from the fact I’m a male writer in a genre primarily dominated by women. Other than that I think the comparisons stop there.
