“I’m excited to raise the curtain on act three, to reinvent myself in my new home to pursue whatever opportunity there may be. It’s an exciting prospect to me. They’ve done a wonderful job of wrapping up [my] character. So this seems like the ideal time to go," he said of his departure from the series.

After completing his final scene, Anthony — who has been awarded eight Outstanding Lead Actor Daytime Emmys for his portrayal of Luke Spencer on General Hospital — was surprised by the cast and crew with a video montage of his many years on the program.

“Not having you here is going to be sad for me,” Anthony's costar Maurice Benard — who plays Sonny Corinthos — told the actor during the touching tribute. “Thank you for the best acting partnership I’ve ever known," added Genie Francis, who portrays Anthony's character's wife, Laura Spencer, on the show. (The pair's onscreen characters famously married on the show in 1981. Thirty million viewers tuned in to watch them tie the knot, and it still holds the record for the most-watched episode in Daytime history.)
Anthony first joined General Hospital in 1978 and announced his departure from the series in May 2015.
