Poor, Amelia Shepherd. As if the Grey’s Anatomy character hadn’t been through enough, it was revealed in the Season 14 premiere that she has a brain tumor. Amelia (played by Caterina Scorsone) decided to participate in Carina DeLuca’s research study which monitors the female brain before, during, and after sexual climax. When she came out, she saw a brain on the screen with a large tumor and said “that is a beautiful tumor” without realizing it was her own.

“He doesn’t know that the tumor exists,” Kevin McKidd (who plays Owen Hunt) told Entertainment Weekly. “It doesn’t take too long for him to find out, and he steps up as a husband should. Even if Amelia said certain things to him, and even if he’s obviously very conflicted and very much looking at the possibility that this marriage might not work, and they’re on different pages, he definitely steps up in the role as he should do.”

What’s even more of a game-changer is that Amelia’s tumor could be the explanation for her recent behavior. Keep scrolling to learn more about her fate!

Does Amelia Shepherd die?

We sure hope not! But, honestly this character has survived so much and she’s lived to tell her tale. Her father was murdered in front of her, her baby was born without a brain (and sadly passed away), her brother died from an injury to the brain, and now she has a tumor. Some fans have pointed out the irony of so many tragic brain-related incidents happening to the neurosurgeon. It does seem like this storyline will play out during the season, so she should have to be alive for that.

“She hasn’t known for many, many years, and this tumor has been growing for a long, long, long time and has been affecting all her choices and all of her actions and nobody knew it, least of all her,” Kevin continued. “So it’s a tough one for Owen because he’s left with dealing with this person who, going forward, if they manage to remove the tumor, could potentially have a very different personality to the one that he married. She has a lot of questions about, ‘Who actually will I be when this thing is taken away from me?’ So it’s going to impact everything.”

Last night, viewers waited in anticipation for Amelia to wake up form her brain surgery. “When you’re going into surgery you worry you won’t wake up,” Amelia explained in the episode. “But with brain surgery, you worry you will wake up but you won’t be there when you do.” And unfortunately, that did happen to Amelia (but only for a little while). After she woke up, she asked for her late brother, Derek, clearly forgetting he passed away. Thankfully, her memory came back to her but not before causing her (and viewers!) to freak out.

Will Owen Hunt and Amelia Shepherd get back together?

The once-in-love couple has been living apart for months. Their differences stemmed from the fact that Owen wanted a baby while Amelia was content with not having any more children after she lost her newborn son. But, now she is sick and it looks like Owen will stand by her through it — could they put their marriage back together?

“It could be, or it could be the thing that finally makes them realize that maybe they weren’t [meant to be],” Kevin explained. “When you realize you’ve been with somebody that isn’t the same person you thought they were, at least in this situation there’s a real justification for that, so I think it’s going to make them wrestle with facts and really look at what their life has been for the last three to four years. It’s going to be a tricky path for them.” We can’t wait to see Amelia’s new storyline unfold!
